UCT Director Vacancies 2024 Detailed Job Description

Executive Director

The main purpose of this position:-

The Communications and Marketing Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive
marketing and communications strategies that promotes, supports and protects the university’s brand and reputation. The
Executive Director will lead a team of talented professionals to achieve short-term and long-term goals, manage the CMD
budget, and work collaboratively with senior individuals and organizations in order to meet the University’s strategic
objectives.
The incumbent ensures that all UCT offerings on all the communication and marketing platforms e.g. online, media, print,
video, promotional and advertising material, events and stakeholder engagements are of an excellent, creative and
innovative quality that demonstrably contributes to the positioning of UCT regionally, nationally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities:-

  • To support the Vice-Chancellor (who is responsible overall for the University’s advancement as an organisation)
    in designing and implementing an effective and integrated communication and marketing strategy for the
    University.
  • The comprehensive communication and marketing strategy should be designed to help the university advance
    and achieve key institutional goals.
  • To co-ordinate and support communications and marketing functions as a whole and integrate communication
    and marketing strategies across the faculties and other departments.
  • Serve as a communications advisor to council and senior leadership of the university.
  • To ensure that there is an appropriate and effective departmental structure in place to further UCT’s objectives in
    reputational and brand positioning as a top university in Africa.
  • To develop good relationships with local, national and international media.
  • To ensure various institutional communication channels are maintained and designed to encourage effective
    communication with internal and external audiences.
  • To develop a crisis communication plan with other officers of the University that is implemented in the event of an
    emergency or other extraordinary circumstance.
  • To direct communication and marketing activities designed to link UCT with the communities it serves and to
    enhance the university’s revenue generation.
  • To support campaigns, institutional and special events required by the University.
  • To provide strategic leadership to the Communications and Marketing Department as a whole, to ensure the
    efficient management of the department and its activities.
  • To ensure sound oversight of human resources and financial management for CMD.
  • To ensure transformation, inclusion, diversity including employment equity departmental goals are developed,
    supported and achieved

Minimum Requirements:-

  • NQF 9 i.e., Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field preferred

Minimum experience (type and years):-

  • At least 10 years executive experience in communications and marketing roles
    responsible for advising and leading the communications and marketing direction and
    functions of complex and large institutions or organisations.
  • The CMD team consists of 40 professionals and candidates should have experience
    managing a large or similar team.
  • Experience in the education sector or higher education institutions preferred.

Skills:-

  • Strategic thinking and planning abilities.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools and techniques.
  • Financial and Human Resource management skills.

Knowledge:-

  • Knowledge of communications and marketing principles and strategies.
  • Knowledge of the higher education sector and trends.
  • Knowledge of brand management and reputation building.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing tools and platforms.

Advantageous:-

  • Current communication and marketing conventions, and practices.
  • Current South African media landscape, specifically in higher education.
  • South African Press practices (e.g. republication of content, use of images and photographs [including those relating to minors], permissions for reuse of external content etc.).
  • Publishing conventions [online, both local and international].
  • The South African Constitution, including [but not limited to] legal limitations to the freedom of artistic creativity, and freedom of the press and media in as far as respecting people’s privacy, dignity and reputation.
  • Policy and procedures related to university administration.
